This break was truly needed. As a carer to two young people aged 19 and 16, each with their own individual needs, no two days are ever the same. While I dedicate myself fully to supporting them, I also live with my own disabilities and health challenges, which for many years have gone largely unnoticed.
I experience chronic pain, high blood pressure, severe headaches, and other ongoing health-related issues. Often, my needs have been overlooked because the focus has understandably been on my children. When I was using a wheelchair, my disability was more visible and therefore more acknowledged. However, since pushing myself to become more mobile and independent, it feels as though my needs no longer matter. I have been left to manage my own care while continuing to care for my children.
The ongoing masking, anxieties, stress-related pressures, and additional responsibilities that carers face on top of managing our own health are exhausting. When I was offered the opportunity of a Carefree break, it honestly felt too good to be true. This was my second break since starting with you in 2025, and I genuinely look forward to it each time.
One of my biggest struggles while away is ensuring that my children are properly supported. I worry constantly about them. If they feel anxious, their first instinct is to call me for reassurance, as they do not yet feel confident seeking support from others. My greatest fear for the future is how they will cope if I am not around. That is why I am continuously teaching them practical skills and coping mechanisms, so they can gradually build independence and manage unexpected situations.
This break also helped me realise just how much my body has been struggling. Although I slept well, I felt like I never wanted to get up. I truly wish we had more days away, even a full week would be a dream. I feel as though I could sleep for that entire week just to restore my energy levels and properly look after myself, which I know I desperately need.
Since returning, I received a message from my doctors acknowledging that they now recognise me as a carer and apologising that it has taken so long. They have offered to book me in for a carer’s assessment. After all this time, I am hopeful that my voice will finally be heard and that I can move forward with the right support in place. At this point, I honestly feel like I am hanging on by a thread.
Thank you again for this opportunity. I will always be grateful for your services. I actively share this information with other parents in my community, including families connected with Bridge the Gap Ending Digital Poverty CIC, because so many families and carers suffer in silence simply due to not knowing what support is available. I make it a priority to spread awareness so others can access the help they deserve.
The hotel team were incredibly friendly and helpful, especially the receptionist when we arrived. Initially, the TV remote was not allowing us to connect our Firestick to watch a movie and relax. She went out of her way to search for another remote, trying several options before finally finding one that worked. Thanks to her persistence, we were able to enjoy a lovely evening watching a movie before heading to bed. I was truly grateful, as I rarely get the time to simply switch off and do something so simple yet meaningful. It really is the small things that matter.
The same appreciation goes to the spa area and facilities. The team looked after us very well. The massage we paid for was absolutely lovely. We enjoyed the steam room and had a swim, which meant I was able to get some much-needed exercise, something I hardly ever have time for at home due to constant responsibilities and ongoing demands.
The waiters and kitchen staff were also very kind and friendly. We truly loved this hotel. It has been my second stay there, and I keep coming back because of the genuine care and service they provide. They truly deserve recognition for the grace and kindness they showed my mum and me during our two-day break.
Thank you very much for everything.
