It's wonderful to think these hotels are so kind in giving free nights away,it makes you feel sort of special and cared for, in that they understand how hard being a carer is. It really is a wonderful, thoughtful thing to do.

Our Carefree break was honestly such a wonderful experience, and we are so grateful to have been given this opportunity.
As a full-time carer, I'm so used to being constantly on high alert, managing everyone's needs, worries and emotions that I don't think I realised just how exhausted I was, both mentally and physically. Before going, I wasn't sure how much difference just one night away could really make, but I couldn't have been more wrong!
Once we arrived, it felt like I could finally switch off, relax and just be myself rather than being in constant caring mode. It gave both my husband and me something we rarely get — precious quality time together, doing something just for us, without the usual responsibilities and pressures.
It was honestly so refreshing and made such a difference to my wellbeing. We came home feeling happier, reconnected and recharged, and I felt so much more able to return to my caring role after having that little bit of time for myself.
The Winchester Hotel & Spa was lovely! It was clean, welcoming and perfectly located for exploring beautiful Winchester, with so much to see and do nearby. We had such a wonderful time and would absolutely love to return one day, as there was so much we didn't manage to fit into our short stay!
Having the break on a Friday evening was also a huge help, as my husband didn't need to take time off work, and it made arranging care for my daughter and mum much easier.
A huge thank you to Carefree and the hotel for making this possible. Sometimes, as a carer, you forget what it feels like to have time for yourself, and this experience reminded me just how important that is. It really was more than just a night away to us. ❤️

I felt looked after and valued as a carer; recognised. I had fun without worrying about others' needs the whole time. I realised how tired I was and how important it is to find time for just me. I really enjoyed that the hotel had a swimming pool I could use because I miss swimming, and it is helpful to move my body and process thoughts. Also, the hotel staff were so friendly, and I felt able to relax. It was a treat that I needed. Thank you

Carers need more support. Being the support system for someone, along with all the emotional challenges that caring brings, is incredibly hard. I was made to feel guilty for going away and for not taking them with me or taking them on holiday, but I had to push through that feeling.
It was important to me because, for that short space of time, I felt human again. I felt like an actual person who was being listened to. I sat and chatted to another hotel guest in the beautiful bar and lounge area simply because I could. I did not have to worry about having to dash off. I genuinely cannot remember the last time I had done something like that.
The break has also given me something to talk about since coming home, rather than only having the mundane things that would usually fill my days.

It was important to me to get away from my caring responsibilities.
My stay was at the Village Hotel Coventry. Although the hotel was clean, people were coming and going all the time to use the gym and pool and to watch the football.
I was really looking forward to breakfast but was bitterly disappointed. The breakfast was very similar to a Beefeater. I won’t be booking another Village Hotel.
I frequently find it difficult to find a two-night break. One night is not sufficient as you are only there from 3pm to the next morning.
I’m very grateful, however, that I have always eventually been able to find a two-night break.

My husband and I were able to concentrate on each other, talk, and enjoy each other’s company, which is rare at home. We would not have been able to afford to go away without Carefree. I was able to provide my husband with a birthday treat without feeling guilty about the cost.
My parents, who looked after my daughter, were glad to be able to do something to help us and see us happy, as they usually feel powerless to do anything to help.
The hotel was beautiful and comfortable, and it felt like we were valued guests.

It gave me space to breathe and reflect. So when I returned, I felt a bit more relaxed.
This break means a lot because caring for my father is pretty full-on. The hotel was comfortable, and I was made to feel very welcome.

I loved being somewhere else — not worrying about home life and feeling treated to a bit of luxury which I can’t afford but definitely deserve. I do so much and am not rewarded, and it feels so unfair how money makes the world go round, but it is love that makes the world keep living.

My husband and I went to Portsmouth Village Hotel for two nights. The staff were friendly and the service was very good. My husband especially appreciated the gym!
I care for my two adult children and a neighbour. The load recently has been too great, and the break away confirmed the need to pass on the responsibility of caring for my neighbour so I have time to look after my family and myself. It also gave my husband and me time together just before he has an intense period of work. Being able to enjoy time at the Historic Dockyard and focus on something other than caring was really helpful.
I did, however, have a phone call about a health issue involving one of my children whilst on a Victorian warship! I really appreciated the comprehensive package the hotel gave us, including parking and use of the gym. That makes you feel valued, not just occupying a room no one else wanted.

I took the chance to meet up with my brother, who I rarely see now. It was wonderful to reconnect. I wish I had thought to book a second night, which I could have afforded. As a carer, I am never alone and I miss that too. For me, it is not about the money, but Carefree gave me the push I needed to do this.
One rather funny reaction came from my partner - he must have seen how good it was for me, and now he thinks he should go for respite too! It would have to be a nursing home for him, and I can’t see that happening, but it has given him something to think about.

My break was important because my husband suffers numerous falls, and I am permanently on edge, on high alert when he moves. The constant heightened state of anxiety is exhausting. To have time without that is priceless to my mental and physical wellbeing. Usually, I go with a friend, but because my mum passed away last year and I’d cared for her until the end, I needed time without thinking about anyone else. It was perfect.
The hotel was fantastic, with amazing staff who went over and above. It was my second time there, and I’m not sure I’d want to go anywhere else by choice. It’s not too far to travel either.
I cannot praise Carefree or the Oxford Belfry Hotel enough. My sincere thanks to you all.

This break came at the right time. I had been feeling so low, overwhelmed and fed up. But I have now had time for me, reminded myself that I am also human. It’s given me and my husband time to just chat and have a meal out, which we never get to do. I now feel like we have become closer. I now feel revitalised and refreshed, and that I can cope with my caring responsibilities. I am stronger now, and I can’t thank Carefree enough. I really needed this break, and it has helped me soooo much.

I really appreciated having time away for myself. Not feeling in demand and not having to worry was just amazing. When you are a carer, you don't realise how much you feel under pressure until that pressure is lifted, which is exactly what this break provided me with. No pressure, just me time. Thank you so much.
The hotel staff were amazing. So kind and considerate. A great hotel to stay at and would love to return.

I feel so positive after a two-day break — I haven’t felt like this for months. I have more energy and can concentrate better. I’m amazed at the difference it has made. It feels so much better, and knowing I can have another break later in the year helps me feel that I’m not completely on my own.

As a parent carer I feel guilty for taking any time away from my daughter. Carefree breaks push me to arrange alternative care for two nights so I can have a whole day to myself to rest and reinvigorate. When I return to my daughter I feel energised and valued. Thank you

I had a lovely much needed break away with my husband. Our daughter was looked after by her siblings so we were able to have some worry free time away together. We wouldn't have been able to do this without the help of Carefree, our local care team and the support from our other children.

I was so grateful to get a break away from my caring responsibilities for my father. I was able to take my son with me. To be in a different place without the need to do the chores and to have a delicious breakfast included was also wonderful. I was looking forward to it the whole year and I’m pleased the dates matched up so I could be away on my birthday. Thank you very much!

I ticked 'yes' I could have taken a break without Carefree but it wouldn't have been as long and it's quite likely I wouldn't have got round to it. Your breaks are the spur to plan more than a night away to visit family which is so important. The only hotels offering 2 nights at the time we were able to go were in Scotland - quite a trek from Oxford. But we had 2 nights with friends on the way up and a night with our son on the way back making a really refreshing time away. The hotel was lovely, very friendly a cut above where we would normally stay - eating in a restaurant with linen tablecloths was a real treat! It makes you feel the caring work you do is appreciated by people beyond the family. Thank you for making this possible it means so much to us.

I have been living with my Father for just over 6 months but taken care of him for 5 years. My health has deteriorated terribly and having a night away to relax was wonderful. Getting up in the morning and having breakfast prepared for me, watching tv with a cup of tea with my feet up, and having dinner out was a luxury. The hotel staff were absolutely lovely and the room was great. Thank you so much for this opportunity, I really appreciate it.

It had been eight years since my partner and I took a break without our children. We could never quite justify the cost of a child-free getaway, but with the hotel already paid for, we were finally able to arrange childcare and dog care without breaking the bank.
Finding the right hotel wasn’t easy — it had to be close enough (for the sake of the children and dogs) and available over the weekend, since we both work and a midweek stay wasn’t an option. Fortunately, we found a lovely spot near Oxford for a Friday night.
We had an amazing time together — something we’d both needed for a long time. The hotel was perfect: a comfortable room, a fantastic breakfast, and even a swim on Saturday morning. It was exactly what we needed.

Being away allowed me to relax and stop doing things all the time. I slept a lot and read a book, and even found a bit of time to start my festive shopping. The Telford hotel was good, really helpful staff, clean and quiet location, great food.

The break was really important as it gave me time to myself, time to enjoy a new set of surroundings and have things done for me (meals). I even tried something new, aquarobics, which was brilliant. The hotel was lovely, the breakfasts were delicious and the bedroom was lovely with plenty of space. Thank you so much for a lovely stay!

It was so amazing, and with it being free it made me feel my role as a carer was so important, and that these hotels recognise that by kindly letting us stay for free. I felt special in my role and that people do actually understand, and how utterly generous it was of them.

I had a wonderful much needed experience at this hotel and I just chilled out around Cambridge sitting/eating in the sun and walking around looking at arty venues. The nicest hotel that I have stayed in the UK. I chose it as it looked quite special ref the interior decoration etc. Prior to going I was nearly falling to pieces and this break revived me greatly. I had one free night but my break was of two halves with one friend on the first day and another on the second day (as 2nd friend booked an extra night to stay longer). Both these friends have children living in Cambridge. I invited them partly due to this Cambridge connection. On my second day we had the free ride in a Bentley car around some countryside and the city. I felt that Cambridge seemed more like a big town than a city (me coming from the rival city of dreaming spires lol). I would love to thank Gonville Hotel for letting me stay, very good friendly service, nice quiet bedroom and good choice of breakfast included. I would go back if possible.

It was only just over an hour away, so easy to get home if necessary. The hotel was nice and the staff were helpful and friendly. We got the bus to various places, so we didn’t need to worry about parking, and the weather was glorious!
Our son was able to look after mum for effectively one day as we left on Sunday and returned on Tuesday. We would never have done it without Carefree, as I would have thought it was just too much planning, organising, and expense for a couple of days. Just what we needed. Thank you.

Thank you so much to the Village Hotel in Birmingham and to Carefree for making this possible. I feel very relaxed and more able to tackle the daily challenges from my special needs children.
The break couldn’t have come at a more perfect time, as life has been particularly challenging recently, but I feel I’m now seeing things more clearly and am ready to help and support my young person.
The hotel was very welcoming and went above and beyond for us—it was so lovely. I even went to the cinema, something I haven’t done in years. This is something I can’t ever do without physically taking time away. It was so lovely, so thank you so much to everyone who helped make this possible. It really does make a massive difference to us all. x

I am a full-time carer and also work full-time, so this break was a fantastic opportunity to relax and recharge. My own health has taken a downward turn, and I really needed a break from everything. I was able to get away with my daughter for her 19th birthday. We both care for her sister, so was good to have some time off and I could focus on her.
We stayed in Stratford Upon Avon and went to a Shakespear's play. We also had dinner at the rooftop restaurant.
A lovely hotel, the room was spacious and there was a bath!
The staff were very kind. We stayed 2 nights and my daughter said, it was her best birthday ever.

This was an important time for me to not worry and just reset. This was an amazing break, the hotel really looked after us and was luxurious, and it was all stress-free. I had time to relax and put myself first. The hotel catered really well for allergies. I want to go back so badly.

I had never been to Basingstoke, but did not fancy going out because of the weather. I went to the cinema on the first evening and ate in the hotel on the second. I chose a Spa Hotel and booked a massage before I arrived. I have not had a massage for about 4 years. I wish I had checked in advance to take more advantage of the facilities.I feel more confident now about taking days away.

It was a much needed break from the stress and pressures at home. I’m a lone parent carer so no respite from the other parent at all. It was important for my mental health to have some time on my own and try to recover a little from the stress. It was hard to get the caring responsibilities covered for 2 nights but having 2 nights made such a difference from the one night last year, it takes time to relax and come down from the fight/flight mode at home.
The hotel was lovely, really clean, friendly staff and a lovely pool. I can’t wait to be able to go back again another time (I hope).

I was able to see a great friend and several members of my family over the one night break. I was quite relaxed as I wasn’t too far from home and could have got back quickly if needed. I had some nice meals out, good chats, and was able to go to a couple of galleries, something I haven’t done in years. The hotel was really nice, clean and tidy and the staff friendly, and there was enough breakfast to keep you going through the day if you wanted that. It was really nice. Thank you!

It was so good to feel like an individual again and not just an extension of being a carer. Having normal conversations with people which did not revolve around my caring responsibilities. The hotel was really comfortable and it was great to enjoy a meal which I didn't have to prepare or clear up afterwards, it was quite liberating. I would highly recommend to any carer to take a break however short it might be, it was wonderful.

This break was long overdue. I wasn’t confident enough to leave my son, who I care for, and I had never slept away from him before. This break gave me the time to do normal things for myself.

I was looking forward to the break because it was the first time ever I was going to take time away from my son. I went on a one-night break to a hotel in Birmingham. Although I was nervous leaving him behind, I was exhausted and burnt out. The hotel was good and for the first time I had some free time which felt strange at first, but then as if a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders. We walked around enjoyed the fresh air and the food. However it became stressful when an ambulance called me and my son had a panic attack because it was the first time ever being away from me. My husband handled him and calmed him down. I had a lovely break and felt so refreshed and good when I came back. I realised that there is a life beyond caring. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to take a break. I hope to take another break soon.

The break was just glorious! We picked a hotel that we knew would be a great base to get outside and walk which we love, but rarely have time to do.

We had a beautiful room where I could relax in peace. The breakfast was delicious, and it was so nice to have it all done for me. The coffee and tea in the room were excellent. My son, who I care for, had an emergency operation on the first day, but I was still able to enjoy my break knowing he was being cared for until I got home. The hotel kindly let me bring his little dog, who was very well-behaved. Everyone was so friendly, and the staff were lovely and very helpful. It was a great two days. Thank you very much 😊

I don’t know where to start. I’ve had a wonderful, carefree break with my eldest grandson. It gave me the opportunity to take time to consider my own mental health and well-being. I spent time walking, resting, and swimming—something I could not have done at home. I feel refreshed and ready to face the challenges of being a full-time carer. Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity to spend quality time away from my caring role. We stayed at the Village Hotel, Portsmouth. The staff were extremely helpful, and we found the whole experience at the hotel delightful. Thank you.

My sister and I care for our stepdad who is 97, bedridden, and cannot be left alone, so my sister and I never have any downtime together. It was wonderful spending time out of the house together. Having my Carefree Break really helped me as I felt that I was near breaking point. Of course, I would not really break as I am quite strong-willed, but I certainly felt it due to what was going on just before leaving and generally feeling very tired from the previous months. I had hoped to be well-organised, but one can't predict circumstances, and I ended up packing my bags very much after midnight on the day of leaving for my break.
It showed me that short breaks can make a big difference. In the last five years, I have only had seven nights away: two nights for a university reunion in September 2023, two nights for a milestone birthday in early 2024, and this two-night Carefree break in 2024, with an extra night in a cheap Airbnb to make travelling more worthwhile. Having a break away also helped my relationship, as we were away from our everyday lives that can be stressful.
We would really like to thank Norton Park Hotel, Spa & Manor House for their hospitality. We had a great time in a lovely, peaceful place to visit among parkland, with friendly staff and a fantastic breakfast on offer. We used the bar for food in the evening, and I had a dip in the swimming pool. We also made trips to such places as Winchester, as we like medieval cities with cathedrals and history. We really appreciated this opportunity. 10/10.

My husband and I care for our grown-up daughter at home, and this break enabled us to feel like grown-ups. The main benefit was not having to stick to a routine. The hotel was great, upgraded our room, and gave us an earlier check-in. It was a lovely break. Thank you.

I felt more cared for with the opportunity to stay in a nice hotel and receive a gorgeous pamper box. When you're an unpaid carer, those small gestures make a difference to your well-being

I went away for the night on my own. I went looking round shops and then to the hotel. It was the first time I have done this. It made me realise I need a regular break. I have not felt that relaxed and at ease in years. The hotel was amazing breakfast was beautiful. Thanks so much.

We stayed at the Cambridge Belfry Hotel and it was lovely. We booked for a spa treatment on the first day, which was amazing. The room and the hotel itself was great and all the staff were very nice and helpful. This made a massive difference to me being able to switch off and completely relax.

Great hotel, 10/10! Our break was just so relaxing. It really helped to recharge the batteries, and it’s fantastic to have a great organisation such as Carefree.

The Stratford Manor Hotel is lovely. Friendly staff and comfortable facilities. I hope to go again one day. My break was important because it’s exhausting and lonely being a carer for adult children who have mental health difficulties. Thanks to all concerned.

I felt totally relaxed. I think the only way you can have a proper rest is to get away every so often. I keep in touch with the person I'm caring on the phone to make sure she was fine, but she had somebody there to help. The hotel was marvellous. The people there was so kind and helpful and the breakfast was lovely. I would go again.

First time staying in a hotel room with my wife for over 15 years. A reminder that I am someone with needs other than just caring for others 24hr a day.

This is our second Carefree break here. Lovely food and very comfortable room. I took best friend again (daughter has autism). We ate, drank wine, talked and only moved of our beds for evening meals. Just brilliant. Thank you.

The hotel was so lovely. I went to bed early and caught up on years of lost sleep. Before I went away I felt like I was on the verge of a breakdown. I really needed the break. Thank you so much for what you do!

Taking time out for me was a massive mental check in with myself and allowed me time to evaluate things and to be myself and not just a carer. I have come back so refreshed and feel more able to look after for the person I care for. I can't thank you all enough and say how much this has affected my mental wellbeing. I feel so much stronger than I did before I went away.

Thank you so much for offering this service. It's the 2nd year I've booked with you. Total life-saver. Without it I couldn't afford to go away and have a break.

It was absolutely marvellous to relax in a nice hotel with lovely room and good facilities. I was able to afford a massage in the spa centre, because my room was free; and I got to swim and get some good exercise this way. Your service and offering is truly priceless and has made a massive difference to my health and wellbeing. Thank you so much.

I have been caring for both of my parents for over 2 years. Sadly my Mum passed away in December last year and I hadn't had a chance to stop. I have still been caring for my Dad whilst organising the things that needed to be sorted since Mum's passing. The break just gave me time for me and I didn't realise how much I needed it. The Hotel was fabulous and the staff were so kind and helpful even with our dog. Thank you so much.

Nice hotel facilities with easy check-in and out. Great breakfast included that set you up for the day. I spent a day in the spa. You get free use of pool and sauna, but I paid for a massage and facial, as a treat.
